Episode 301: Miss Hap’s Mishap!

Unfortunately, my old nemesis ‘anxiety’ has come calling again recently, and I have been feeling steadily worse as the days go by. What with my gammy eye as well, I don’t look that great either!

Anyway, suffice to say, I have slept a huge amount today, and done very little else. Miss Hap went off to school and Mr Grump to work, so I was pretty undisturbed for most of the day. (What a shame I can’t sleep so well at night)!

By the time Miss Hap came home I had woken up but was still a bit groggy. I noticed though that she appeared to be limping. Before I had a chance to ask what was wrong she thrust a carrier bag at me. Curious, I opened it up, only to find the sole of her shoe in it!

Now school shoes are a bit of a bugbear with Miss Hap, not least because she has extremely flat feet with no arch to them at all. Add to that,  the desire to have something that is not going to be classed as ‘old-fashioned’ (like the Clarks shoes she has had right up until secondary school). It has been quite a challenge all-in-all.

However, we were lucky that just before school started we found some that we liked (as in they were not too high or too flimsy) and that she was prepared to wear. Now, I don’t know if anyone remembers the ‘beetle-crusher’ type shoes (or ‘brothel keepers’ as we used to call them, God knows why), well they have made a comeback.

I think they were originally popular with the ‘Teddy Boys’ of the 60s (I don’t actually think girls wore them), and I quite like them despite my sister (Mrs Masterchef) saying they resembled some sort of orthopaedic shoe!

We bought her some lovely black (of course for school) suede shoes, which in keeping with this style had a one inch thick rubber sole which looks like a caterpillar tread that you have on tanks. These lasted quite well for her as she wears shoes out pretty quick. The next pair we got had ‘jewels’ on them but were not allowed, so we bought this last pair which were not the same quality, hence the detachment of the sole!

Miss Hap thought we could easily remedy the situation with a bit of glue as she is not allowed to wear trainers whilst we sort out some new ones. Oh well. looks like we will have to risk the wrath tomorrow as the jewelled ones will have to make a guest appearance for a day!

  1. Lauren wears nothing but Docs…. In London last year she bought white patent boots and purple patent shoes… She has basic black boots, and Peter ( Dr Dad) was in London again last week and brought her back red shoes with a red jelly- type sole. We have the school musical this week, and her life’s ambition is recorded in the programme as : to own a pair of Docs in every colour! That’s MY girl!

    1. Sounds like Lauren has got some pretty nifty footwear! It’s great that she likes Doc Martens too, I think they are great especially as there are so many colours now! 🙂

  2. Shoes and kids.. my bugbear! Lil Man, being the totally typical boy he is, goes through them like anything, and a couple of years back, his feet were so narrow, finding anything that fit him, that he was happy with was a nightmare! it seems to have got better, but now I have Lil Princess scuffing hers constantly…. do these kids even know how to walk properly??!!

  3. Sounds like your school there is pretty strict, but I don’t get it…..why can she not wear trainers, but can wear jeweled shoes? That’s still not uniform shoes, right?

Hoping your eye is at least showing a bit of improvement?

  4. I love a comfy shoe too. I was lingering in our local Dr Marten shop the other day. Now those are fine shoes for the discerning young Miss, if she likes brothel creepers. Not cheap though, especially if she’s one of those pesky kids who keep growing!!!

  5. hope you are feeling a little better with your day ‘off’. My anxiety is in full swing these days too. What is it with 2015?
Of course my daughter heading home to us in a week to DRIVE the 6000 km (with her cat) doesn’t help my worrying mind.

Good luck with the shoe hunt – but what fun that for one day she can break the rules and wear jewels!

    1. Yes 2015 has been a bit naff so far to say the least! I am sorry you are not feeling so well either. It will be lovely for you to see your daughter although I know you are worried about the long drive. Miss Hap will love breaking the rules!

  6. I remember those teddy boy shoes, they look great, but I might be a bit too old now. Oh how Miss Hap will love you for the jewelled shoes. When you say, jewelled, what exactly do you mean? I’ve only seen one photo of Miss Hap and somehow I don’t imagine her in a Cinderella type shoe with jewels on them, I reckon she’d rather go barefoot 🙂 We’ll be changing her name to tinker-bell

    1. Funnily enough she does like a bit of sparkle but only nail varnish, or eye shadow (!) She would never wear a Cinderella shoe! These are still the beetle crushers but they have got a bit of bling around the toe part!

  7. This reminds me of how I am so glad my kids’ uniform days are over. Just so much hassle, and often costly for no particular reason.Their current school district allows nearly anything, including flip flops and shorts, plus no one cares about how faded the trousers might be, lol! Oy.
Anyway, sorry about Miss Hap’s shoe. Hope the blingy ones will do for a day. Also hope you’re feeling better 🙂
