Episode 411: Nice Sales Pitch!

As some of you may know, we are in the midst of a heat wave at the moment here in the UK, and of course some of us are suffering due to the heat, which quite frankly we are not used to.

I am not going to moan about the weather this time, just tell you a couple of funny stories. The first one was on Thursday afternoon. I came home from work and Mr Grump was out, he had finished a little before me and my sister and niece had phoned him up to see if he wanted to join them at a local pub for a pint.

Never one to miss such an opportunity, he jumped at the chance. After all, a nice refreshing beer in this heat is rather welcome. The pub is recently under new management and they are doing their best to encourage some more punters in, offering SKY Sports TV, showing all the football, and a new menu .However, their biggest boast was the fact that they are ‘doing their bit for the regulars in this heat wave by watering down the beer!’

I was working today and as I have mentioned it is stifling hot up on the ward, and everyone moans about it (we are allowed to go tightless now though). Relatives are hot and flustered, and staff are dripping with sweat (literally) and florid of face!

The only people who do not complain are the patients who relish the heat. Having said that, it was so hot up there today we actually had the windows open and none of the patients asked us to close them.

Around 10 o’clock whilst we are still trying to carry out our morning washes on the patients, (we have all got gloves & aprons on). we hear the dreaded sound of ‘ne-ner-ne-ner STAGE 1 ALERT.’ Oh no, not the bloody fire alarm! This means that there could be a fire on the same floor but not necessarily near our ward. It does mean however that we have to go around and shut every window and door as a precaution!

To say that was rather a fraught half hour until we were told to ‘STAND DOWN’ would be rather an understatement!

  1. Everyone else is talking about a heat wave, but I don’t get it, London is lovely. What temp do you guys call a heat wave? prob 65 or something ridiculous. Did you know that we are heading for a mega one at the end of July/aug, temps 98+

    1. Anything over 30 degrees C is too hot for me to bear whilst O am working, Just can’t sleep. God knows how I will cope with the mega heatwave, I expect I will be moaning more about it! 🙂

      1. London is usually unbearable in July and Aug but this month has been perfect for scots blood. Today it’s 24c. the first year I moved here I was still wandering around in a tshirt in Nov

  2. I think he world’s weather is turning into a Goldlock’s story; too hot, there, too cool here, and wondering where it is just right. And, LOL on the apostrophe! 🙂

  3. Writing from a rain drenched city! This might say more about me than I would like, but, um…I couldn’t help but notice the pub’s misuse of apostrophes!

    1. Ha ha!! That is one of my pet hates! It seems to be a real problem over here, People cannot seem to understand that everything that ends in an ‘s’ does not need an apostrophe before it! 🙂

  4. … You know how we Aussies don’t have a clear concept of what constitutes “cold” ? Well, I’m afraid you Brits are the same with heat.. And your buildings are not designed to cope with it the way ours are… It’s a freezing 11 degrees here today… With Antarctic winds…

  5. I’m sorry to hear that you are still suffering from a heat wave. Here in the Midwest US, people will complain if it’s too hot, cold, rainy or windy within minutes of the weather’s arrival so please feel free to complain. 🙂

  7. Back in Wales and it’s cool and has been rainy, but I’d rather it like this than the horrid day on July 1st when the temperatures in London got to the mid thirties.

    One trick I learnt to beat the heat is to run cold water over your wrists for a few minutes. This is where the blood is closest to the surface of the skin, so the cold water will help cool down the body. Otherwise, try a 99 with a couple of flakes and raspberry sauce 🙂

    As for watering down the beer – well I’ve heard it all now! I’m sure there is a law against that…somewhere.

    1. Ha Ha! Yes, watered down beer does not please Mr Grump! Thanks for the tip on keeping cool too, luckily today is a lot less coller as we have also had rain during the night, It must be lovely there in Wales, not only for the beautiful scenery but the climate too! 🙂

      1. It’s lovely, Judy, but I do miss not being beside the seaside. We’re back at the seaside in just over a weeks time, so it won’t be long.

        Glad the weather has cooled down a little. Makes it a little more bearable, especially at night when trying to sleep.

  13. well…here in Houston, tx we’ve been having ourselves a rather mild summer…and I work nights…and the a/c helps…but we got the bill with that…

  14. I’m beginning to wonder if we’re living in the same country. You talk of the heatwave making us suffer but in the last week apart from one beautiful day I’ve been growing flippin’ webbed feet. It’s been rain, rain and more rain. I only have one thing to say, STOP HOGGIN’ THE SUN and send some up here please. Pretty please.

  15. That is crazy. You are already having a real hard job without heat. I hope you get some relief soon. Just send the heat over I don’t mind it a but… the hotter the better…. (and I am not talking about Tuesdays… lol)

    1. Some of our wards have air con but not ours of course. It was 26 C today outside but on our floor the air was hot and still, even the fans we had dotted around did nothing other than blow hot air about! 🙂

      1. Sometimes the air is soooo heavy. Ugh, I hate heat! lol
        It was 22 here yesterday, and I was thrilled. Cause it’s supposed to be 32 tomorrow, BLECH!

      3. LOL That’s not bad for summer here. Pretty much everywhere in the US will hit 37 before summer’s over, and the bottom half of the country stays in the high 30’s all summer. That’s the Georgia heat I write about. The South’s unbearable to me.
        The desert areas get up into 40’s easily, although most of it has low humidity of course.

      7. Oh, and most of us have air conditioning, that’s how 😉 Air con, with fans. Some have pools and lakes, or the sea, of course 🙂
