Episode 416: Wacky Word Wednesday #10

Can you believe that it is week 10 already of my wacky word Wednesday. I have really enjoyed doing these as they are such fun. Today I have got a bit of a rude word for you, but it sounds so funny and always makes me laugh. It has several meanings as well so a pretty versatile word all round.

Bollocks. Well doesn’t that just roll off the tongue nicely. This word is so much nicer than gonads and testes, balls and even plums. A kick in the bollocks has a much better sound to it!

This word is also babbling balderdash, meaningless mumbo jumbo, and nothing but nonsense!

What about the mutt’s nuts? This word is primped and polished, stylish and smart, in fact, perfectly pukka!

Lastly, this word used as a verb without the ‘s’ is very stern and severe, giving a good telling off, not to mention a tongue-lashing! A reproof and reprimand of the highest order

It is also one of my favourite words.

  2. Have British parents – so I have heard this word through most of my childhood. It is a lovely word. My Dad tells this story of how him and my Mum went to a fancy dress party in England during the 50’s. This very aristocratic lady walks up into the microphone, dressed to the nines, with long white gloves, expensive ballgown and leans towards the microphone. The room falls silent, everyone is waiting to hear what earth-shattering words of wisdom she is going to cast upon the commoners below. And she simply says, “Bollocks!” and walks away.

  4. I’m very behind on posts, but then I remembered it’s Edwina’s wacky (cheeky) word weds and you never fail to tickle my b… you know. Anyway, I love a load of old bollocks in every sense of the word. It rolls off my tongue just nicely… the word, that is

  7. Ah two immediate memories. One is of my slightly batty granny giving directions to my dad. ‘No you turn at that thingy in the road’ ‘What thingy?’ ‘Oh you know. Where you cross. The bollocks.’ And why are animal parts used to express perfection?. Cat’s whiskers, bee’s knees as well as dog’s bollocks and mutt’s nuts.

      2. Oh yes, for sure. I remember he popped up a few years ago on ‘I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here’ He is very funny and intelligent and could inject a lot of ooomph into the music industry.

  9. What a great word. I never heard it before. Now I can use it and no one will have a clue, unless they ask for the definition of course. Then I’ll have to refer them to your blog..:)

  13. They get called leeks here too, because of the way its pronounced, as in balleeks lol

    We also use it here as a term for wise up. If someone tells you they saw a flying pig pig, you reply bollocks with emphasis on the ball….Ooo Er Mrs!
