Just Jot it January 17th – Collection

jjj-2016

I am not sure what to write about for Linda’s Just Jot it January prompt word today. We have been given ‘collection’ to use. I am not really a collector of things. Some people collect spoons, teapots, beer mats, all manner of things really, but that is not for me.

I did have a small record collection, but that got left behind in a move, I had some cassette tapes, but they are amongst my other clutter up in the loft, and as for my CD collection, well it is probably, at least, twenty  years out of date! I haven’t bought music for years, and never buy DVDs. I do have a lot of books, though.

I am a little too obsessive to be a collector, I think.  If I started a collection of something then I would constantly be adding to it, never knowing when to stop until I ended up on ‘Hoarders’ or some such programme. I would then get het up if I had to part with any of it.

I am very possessive of my possessions actually and am not keen on chucking anything out, especially if someone has given it to me. I have recently had some help from my sister on decluttering the shelves in my front room that were so full up, you couldn’t actually see anything!

Every photo of Miss Hap from a baby to present, that was taken by a school  or nursery photographer,  were fighting for space; some teacups that were given to me when dad died were also vying for a spot, as were the many candles that I have got all over the place!

It pained me a great deal to put most of the photos in the loft, and get rid of some of the candles that had seen better days! However, the shelves look much better, and that actually makes me feel better!

For me, collections equate to clutter and I have already got enough of that as it is!

  1. I have bins of kid stuff and family stuff that I’ve saved for a long time. It is hard to sort through it and let pieces of it go. My daughter is older so I make her do it with me. I figure it will save her time later and reduce my “stuff” inventory now 🙂

  2. I am a collector wannabe. I should probably take this post as great advice and stop before I get started, but I really want another snow globe!:-)

  3. I’m not a collector either, but if collecting “rubbish” is considered a collector, then I’m one! LOL! My mother always say I collect rubbish. But they are just things that I’m not using now, yet in good condition. Who knows where I’ll need them? I don’t want to waste money buying stuff I’ve just thrown. 😀

  4. Your points are so clear and they are so well-written, Judy. I am not sure if I am a collector myself but I think I am like you, in terms of hating clutter. 😀

Thank you for such a nice post! 😀

  5. I don’t have space to collect things that aren’t functional. I have no patience for dusting knick-knacks and the like, so I relate to that.
I do not resist purging though. Not one to keep things out of sentiment or just in case. House too small, mind cluttered enough 😉

    1. I can understand why you purge Joey. My mind is pretty cluttered and I have slowly been going through trying to purge things and declutter. It is making me feel a little less stressed as I whittle it down! 🙂

  6. You’re right, Judy. There’s a fine line between collections and clutter. I used to collect antique flower pots from the 40’s and 50’s. I went a little crazy and bought them whenever I’d run across them ( they were inexpensive). I remember saying to Scott once that I never saw them anymore. To which he replied, “That’s because you bought them ALL.” Anyway, they’re all in my basement now…taking up space. I need to remember to get them out and use them occasionally. Getting things tidy and organized is a great feeling. I definitely need to do that, too! 🙂

  7. My collections were gathered with love. Sentiments remembered. Now I have no idea what to do with them! Example? One hundred sixty-two Little Golden Books. They aren’t junky and they look nice on my shelf . with the little boy and girl statuettes, but what will happen to the m when I’m gone? Poor things, nobody left to love them!

      1. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it! Thanks for your wonderful support Eddie!<3
The trouble is, so many things I have managed to throw away, i remember and a project comes up that they would be just perfect for, and I then want them back! One of the advantages of living alone is I can hoard what I like!!! xxx
