#SoCS – Ball

Today is an interesting Stream of Consciousness, Linda has given us ‘ball’ to play with. Hmmm, I can’t immediately think of anything regarding balls (oh, that sounds rather dodgy and has just set me off on the wrong train of thought entirely)! Ahem, time to rein myself in.

Now apart from netball and tennis, I did not really enjoy sport at school. Hockey scared me to death, especially after I got whacked in the face with a hockey stick and ended up with a fat lip! In those days though it was more of an inconvenience if someone got injured, and I just got sent off to the home economics department for some ice, and expected to come back and get on with it!

Another thing I really enjoyed as a child was rounders. We didn’t play it a lot at school but I used to live just by a large green. In the summer a load of local kids would gather together and we would all play rounders together in the evenings. It was great fun and kept us all active. We didn’t need anything other than a bat (sometimes it was a cricket bat or tennis racket or even a bit of wood, a tennis ball and a couple of t-shirts or stones to mark out the bases.

I take with me some very happy memories of growing up there, where we all knew each other, and despite the odd falling out now and again, we all came together in the summer. It is surprising what fun you can have with a ball!

  1. I’ve got to go look up rounders and netball. These are surely English things.
When I was in grade school, I much enjoyed kickball after school. Been a long time since I enjoyed a team sport. Tennis is more my thing.

    1. Yes, I quite like tennis as well. I put a link up for rounders, I believe it is a bit like baseball? Netball is the one sport I was actually not bad at, and played on the school team!

    2. Netball is a great game, but it was always considered a game for girls, as opposed to basketball. But netball involves a lot more skill, as there is no backboard to allow rebound shots, you need to be a lot more accurate when shooting. The boys sometimes played “friendly” matches against the girls’ team at school; we always got thrashed.

      1. HaHA! As you said, it is not that easy to score in netball. My daughter played for a while in her primary school team and it is so different now. The biggest change though is seeing boys on their team!

  2. Baseball was based on rounders, and the rules are very similar. We used to play softball (similar to baseball) in the alleys behind our houses. We could be there all day playing. Great memories…

  3. Love your post, and the vintage pic is great ! I’ve not had a great run with balls, so to speak, I grew up in a neighborhood full of athletic boys, and I was the polar opposite. My favorite game was “Library”. ☺

  4. I did not know about that game, but it sounds like a lot of fun! I was never good at ball games… I could not even throw a snowball far. But I played Volleyball for quite some years… hmm… at least I liked it… lol!

  5. I love no sports involving balls, although I did play volleyball for fun a few times and it was pretty hilarious as I am barely five feet and some of the other players were quite tall. Needless to say, I wasn’t very good but at least I didn’t get hit with the ball! (or not that often anyway)
